SHIMADA GOLDEN, INABA SILVER ON 3RD DAY OF ASIAN C’SHIPS

GUMI, Korea (February 18) – Kayoko Shimada turned heads and turned in a gold medal performance, winning the women’s 59kg category on the third day of the Asian wrestling championships.

 

Meanwhile, Yasuhiro Inaba took the silver medal at 55kg as the men’s freestyle events got under way.  Three more wrestlers bagged bronze medals for Japan.

 

Shimada, the All-Japan runner-up in December, edged Asian Games bronze medal winner 55kg Aiym Abdildina (KAZ) in the quarterfinals and came from behind to defeat two-time Asia champion Yang Senlian (CHN), 2-1, in the final.

 

Inaba, a bronze medalist at the 2010 world championships, breezed through his first three matches at 55kg, but dropped a nail-biter to 2011 world bronze medal winner Hassan Rahimi (IRI) in the final.

 

In other categories, Rio Watari lost to Beijing Olympian Xu Haiyan in the quarterfinals at 63kg but came back for a bronze medal.  Mami Shinkai lost to another Beijing Olympics entry Badrakh Odonchimeg (MGL) in the semifinals at 72kg, but bagged a bronze medal with a win in the third-place final.

 

In the men’s 60kg category, Tomotsugu Ishida took a bronze medal despite an opening loss, 1-2, to two-time Olympian Yogeshwar Dutt (IND).  Ishida, the 2010 world student champion, pinned Zhu Feng (CHN) for the bronze medal.

 

With the conclusion of the women’s freestyle events, Japan was awarded the team trophy for second place with two champions, a runner-up, three bronze medal winners for 58 points.  China took first place with 59 points and three champions, while Kazakhstan climbed into third place with two champions and two bronze medalists on the final day of women’s wrestling for 55 points.

R1 – lost to Liu Xinyi (CHN), 0-2 (1-1, 0-2)

 

72kg – SHINKAI, Mami (Bronze, 9 entries)
