KAZAN, Russia (July 16) – Japan’s three entries on the final day of wrestling at the Universiade stumbled out of the blocks in their opening bouts and failed to advance further into the brackets.
Daichi IBA (JPN), Daisuke KOMORI (JPN) and Akira OSAKA (JPN) all received byes in the opening round, but went down to losses in the round of 16, leaving Japan with a lone bronze medal from the previous day in the greco-roman competition.
IBA wrestled tough at 60kg against Ivan KUYLAKOV (RUS), runner-up in this year’s European championships, but lost 0-2 on a caution (penalty point) and lift from par terre. IBA lost again in repechage to London Olympian Almat KEBISPAYEV (KAZ) by technical fall.
KOMORI lost at 74kg to former junior world bronze medalist Arkadiusa KULYNYCZ (POL) while Akira OSAKA could not keep up with Hungarian Grand Prix winner Mikhail KAJAIA (GEO) at 96kg and lost by technical fall.
