SOFIA (August 15-16) – Japanese wrestlers won three individual crowns and took home the team title from the women’s freestyle events at the junior wrestling world championships.
Yu MIYAHARA (51kg), Risako KAWAI (55kg) and Rino ABE (72kg) paced the Japanese squad with gold medal efforts while Rina OKUNO (44kg) and Kona SUZUKI (67kg) each earned bronze medals for Japan at Arena Armeetz in Sofia.
Japan took the team title with 51 points, followed by Russia and Mongolia, each with 44 points. Russia won the second-place trophy with a champion, two silver medalists and a bronze, while Mongolia was third with a champion and two bronze medalists.
MIYAHARA added the 51kg junior title to her 2010 Youth Olympics gold medal and 2011 world cadet crown, recording three technical falls and defeating defending champion Davaachimeg ERKHEMBAYAR (MGL), 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
KAWAI, also a 2011 world cadet champion, notched three first-period falls, beginning with Mongolian Open winner Orkhon PUREVDORJ (MGL), and then made short work of European junior runner-up Larysa SKOBLYUK (UKR) with a technical fall in the 55kg final.
ABE preferred more dramatic finishes, trailing 5-9 in the 72kg semifinals and then overtaking European junior champion Sabira ALIEVA (AZE), 15-9. In the final, ABE came from 7-12 down at the intermission with takedowns and then an arm-bar for the fall over European junior bronze medalist Tatyana MOROZOVA (RUS).
In addition to Japan’s three champions and team title, foreign exchange student SUKHEE Tserenchimed (MGL), who studies and trains at International Pacific University in Okayama, took the title at 59kg.
SUKHEE, coached in Japan by Hiroshi KADO, defeated European junior champion Petra OLLI (FIN), 6-3, in the semifinals and in the final stopped Braxton STONE (CAN), the winner of two senior Grand Prix events this summer.
