ZRENJANIN, Serbia (August 22-23) – Masako FURUICHI won her third title while Kika KAGATA and Mayu MUKAIDA repeated as champions in the girls events at the cadet wrestling world championships.
The Japanese girls also grabbed a silver medal and four bronze but did not enter a wrestler at 38kg and had to settle for second place behind Russia in the final team rankings.
Russia won with 74 points (two champions, two runners-up and three bronze medalists) while Japan came second with 71 (3-1-4). Ukraine was third with 52 (2-1-2).
FURUICHI defeated Asia cadet champion Zhamila BAKBERGENOVA (KAZ) by technical fall in the semifinals and the stopped Nicole AMANN (GER) in the final for her third title at 65kg in the cadet worlds.
KAGATA, meanwhile, defeated European cadet champion Alina KAZYMOVA (RUS) by fall in the final at 49kg to claim her second cadet crown after last year’s triumph at 46kg.
MUKAIDA rolled to four wins by fall or technical fall, including a first period fall over European silver medalist Luiza SULEYMANOVA (RUS), to repeat as champion at 52kg.
FURUICHI and MUKAIDA are both members of the Japanese Olympic Committee’s program for elite young athletes and attend Abe Gakuin high school in Tokyo.
Meanwhile, Mei SHINDO advanced to the championship final at 70kg, but fell to European runner-up Anastasia SHUSTOVA (UKR) by technical fall and settled for the silver medal.
