ZRENJANIN, Serbia (August 24-25) – Japanese junior high school student Ryo MATSUI won Japan’s first gold medal in the boys’ freestyle events at the cadet wrestling world championships.
Yuhi FUJINAMI took a silver while Toshihiro HASEGAWA and Takuto OTOGURO earned bronze medals as Japan finished in fifth place overall in the team rankings.
MATSUI scored technical falls in all four of his bouts at 42kg, including an 8-1 romp over Asia cadet bronze medalist Younes EMAMICHOGHUEI (IRI) in the final.
MATSUI of Ishiodai junior high school in Aichi became Japan’s first cadet world champion in boys’ freestyle, a day after Japan closed the greco-roman competition with its first two gold medals in any of the boys’ events.
FUJINAMI, meanwhile, rolled into the 63kg finals with a fall and three technical falls, but was stopped, 6-8, by California phenom Aaron PICO (USA), the winner of three U.S. cadet and national junior titles this year.
Last year’s Asia cadet champion at 54kg Rei HIGUCHI was tripped up in the quarterfinals, 5-7, by Uruzbeg TCUMARTOV (RUS), who lost in the semifinals leaving HIGUCHI in eighth place.
Russia won the team competition with four champions, a silver medalist and three bronze medal winners and 85 points. Azerbaijan was second with 66 (1-2-4) followed by Iran with 56 (0-3-2). Japan, with its first cadet world champion, was fifth with 46 (1-1-2).
