WASEDA COMES FROM 11 PTS DOWN TO WIN 1ST UNIV. C’SHIP CROWN

OSAKA (November 9-10) – Waseda University stormed from 11 points down the previous day to claim its first-ever team title on the final day of the All-Japan university freestyle wrestling championships.

Japanese world team member Shori MAEKAWA (120kg) and Kohei KITAMURA (84kg) earned silver medals and Akira OSAKA (96kg) won a bronze medal in the final three weight categories to lift Waseda to a 49-42.5 triumph over Yamanashi Gakuin University.

First-day leader Nippon Sports Sciences University managed only a single bronze medal on the final day of competition at Kanaoka Park Gymnasium and slumped to third place with 39.5 points after two of the NSSU entries failed to place for points.

The team title is Waseda’s first since the championships were first held in 1975, and is the school’s first major wrestling title since taking the East Japan Collegiate League crown in May 2011.

Ken HOSAKA, who took the 66kg title on the opening day of the tourney, was Waseda’s only individual winner and was named the outstanding wrestler of the tourney.

In addition to HOSAKA’s win, Waseda wrestlers also took home two silver and two bronze medals while the two remaining entries finished in fifth place.
