ULANBAATAR (June 6) – Yui SAKANO won her second continental crown and Ayana GEMPEI bagged her first international title as women’s wrestling events got under way at the Asian junior wrestling championships.
Sakano, the 2012 Asia junior champion, edged 2013 junior world champ SUKHEE Tserenchimed (MGL), 6-5, in the 59kg final for her sixth title in international competition.
Gempei, a student at Tokyo’s Abe Gakuin high school, notched three technical falls in the round robin at 67kg and then stopped local favorite OTGONKHUU Oyungerel (MGL), 5-1, in the final.
Japan’s final two entries in greco-roman, Ryota SAITO at 50kg and Shota SEGAWA at 120kg, both fell in the bronze medal finals leaving the greco-roman squad without a medal but with five fifth-place finishes. In final greco-roman team standings,Japan finished in sixth place.
