HASEGAWA, 3 LONDON OLYMPIANS WIN AT MEIJI CUP INVITATIONAL

TOKYO (June 14) – Kohei HASEGAWA and fellow London 2012 Olympic Games teammates Tsutomu FUJIMURA and Norikatsu SAIKAWA triumphed at the Meiji Cup invitational wrestling tournament to secure berths on Japan’s squad for the Asian Games.

Hasegawa, who stumbled in the 60kg quarterfinals at last December’s national championships, edged 60kg national champion Kazuma KURAMOTO in the invitational quarterfinals and 2013 world team member Shota TANOKURA for the Meiji Cup crown at 59kg.

Hasegawa then defeated Kuramoto again in the national team wrestle-off for the chance to wrestle in the Asian Games in Incheon, Korea.

Also at 59kg, Shinobu OTA, who defeated world champion YUN Won-Chol (PRK) on his way to a silver medal at the Asian championships in April, lost in the semifinals to Tanokura and did not get a chance to challenge for a national team berth.

Also in greco-roman, national champions Fujimura and Saikawa breezed past the opposition at 71kg and 98kg, respectively, to punch their tickets for Incheon. Tsukasa TSURUMAKI, national champion at 84kg, nailed down the 80kg title for his national team berth.

In freestyle, national champions Noriyuki TAKATSUKA and Atsushi MATSUMOTO won invitational titles to secure their place on the national team at 60kg and 84kg.

Veteran Takafumi KOJIMA pinned top-seeded Ken HOSAKA in the 70kg semifinals to win the invitational crown and then flattened the Asia bronze medal winner again in the wrestle-off for a spot on the Asian Games team.

Nobuyoshi ARAKIDA had to go an extra match at 125kg, losing to Tomoyuki OKA, 2-1, in the invitational final before rolling past Oka in the national team wrestle-off.

In women’s freestyle, Golden Grand Prix Final bronze medalist Rio WATARI tightened her grip on a ticket to the Asian Games with a 7-4 victory over Yarygin Grand Prix winner Yurika ITO at 63kg.

Meanwhile, 2013 world bronze medalist Sara DOSHO and world team member Hiroe SUZUKI won at 69kg and 75kg, respectively. Chiho HAMADA and Katsuki SAKAGAMI also moved closer to world team berths with wins at 55kg and 60kg.
