PECS, Hungary (July 9-10) – Former junior world champion Chiho HAMADA won the 55kg title in female freestyle while Shiori ITO grabbed a silver medal at 48kg on the opening day of the women’s event at the world university wrestling championships.
Hamada defeated European championships bronze medal winner Irina OLOGONOVA (RUS), 4-1, in the 55kg final for her first international title since winning the 2012 junior world crown. Ito, meanwhile, fell to Nordhagen Classics silver medalist Jasmine MIAN (CAN), 2-4, in the 48kg championship for the silver medal.
Meanwhile, Arisa TANAKA and Mikako HIGUCHI also won bronze medals on the second day of female wrestling, but Japan had to settle for a fourth place overall in the team rankings.
