OSAKA (August 17-19) – Asian junior bronze medalist Taiki YAMAMOTO won six bouts by fall or technical fall to win his fourth high school national wrestling championship title of the year at the greco-roman meet at Sakai municipal gymnasium.
Yamamoto of Hiryu high school in Shizuoka, so far this year, has won the high school freestyle invitational, JOC Cup junior nationals, and high school freestyle nationals. He is now on track to become the fifth wrestler in high school wrestling history to win five national titles in one year at the National Sports Festival in October.
Meanwhile, Yuhi FUJINAMI of Inabe Sogo Gakuen high school notched seven wins by technical fall for the 66kg crown and his third national title of the year. Fujinami won freestyle titles at the national invitational in the spring and the national championships earlier in August.
Daiki KOBAYASHI of Kasumigaura high school, the 50kg champion at last year’s national sports festival, took the 55kg title while Shoya SHIMAE of Tosu Kogyo, a runner-up in the freestyle nationals, took his second silver medal in the two weeks at 60kg.
