Y. Irie Golden; Shimada, FS Team Take Silver on Day Two of Asian C’ships

DOHA (May 7) – Former junior world champion Yuki IRIE (JPN) defeated world bronze medalist KIM Hyon-Gyong (PRK) in the semifinals and stopped Asian Games bronze medalist Vinesh VINESH (IND) for the 48kg crown on the second day of the Asian wrestling championships.

 

Irie notched her sixth international triumph and her first since winning at the Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia in January 2014.

 

In men’s freestyle, Daisuke SHIMADA (JPN) opened with a win over Asian Games bronze medalist Narsingh Panchav YADAV (IND) at 74kg but fell in the final to Takhti Cup titlist Peyman YARAHMADI (IRI), 2-8. Despite the loss, Shimada took home his first medal from an international tourney since earning a bronze medal at the Schultz Memorial in January 2013.

 

Japan also collected three bronze medals from Masakazu KAMOI (61kg), Takafumi KOJIMA (70kg) and Takeshi YAMAGUCHI (97kg) to give Japan the runner-up trophy in the men’s freestyle competition with 60 points. Iran won the team title with four champions and 69 points while Kyrgyzstan was third with 54 points and the 125kg title from Aiaal LAZAREV (KGZ).
