NEW YORK, New York (November 12) – Three-time world champion Miyu Yamamoto Ikeda dropped her opening bout at the NYAC Holiday Open wrestling tournament, but rebounded with four straight wins in repechage for the bronze medal at 48kg.
Ikeda struggled against U.S. national team regular at 51kg Jessica Medina in the second round, giving up 11 points in her three-period loss to the Pan American silver medalist.
Ikeda, 37, however, stormed back through the consolation bracket and qualified for the bronze-medal final with a narrow win over two-time junior world champion Victoria Anthony (USA) in the consolation semifinals.
In the bronze medal final, Ikeda avenged her earlier loss to Medina with a 2-0 (2-2, 1-0) triumph.
In the gold medal final, world bronze medal winner at 51kg Jessica MacDonald (CAN) defeated 2008 world champ Clarissa Chun for her second win in a row at 48kg, after taking the Sunkist Open crown in October.
