YAMANASHI GAKUIN CROWNS 2, HOLDS ON FOR FS COLLEGE TITLE

TOKYO (November 10-11) – Yuki Takahashi and Masakazu Kamoi won the two lightest categories and Yamanashi Gakuin University got enough support in the heavier weights to claim its first national collegiate freestyle wrestling team title in 10 years.

YGU edged Nihon University by two points, 39.5 to 37.5, for its third collegiate crown overall and first since 2002.  Waseda University and Kokushikan University each had a pair of champions for third and fourth place, while Nippon Sport Sciences University (NSSU) finished in fifth.

Takahashi, an Asia junior silver medalist, edged junior world bronze medalist Fumitaka Morishita (NSSU) in the quarterfinals on his way to the 55kg crown, making him the 19th first-year student to win in the collegiate championships.

Junior world team member Kamoi, meanwhile, upset defending champion Masaru Ikeda (NU) in the second round and went on to win the 60kg title, earning selection as the meet's outstanding wrestler.

Another junior world team member Koki Yamamoto (NU) won the 96kg title on the second day of competition and became the 20th freshman to win a title in the collegiate season finale.

Meanwhile, Waseda's Shori Maekawa doubled up on the collegiate championship titles, adding the freestyle crown to his greco-roman title at 120kg in October.
