COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (January 31) – All-Japan runners-up Tsukasa Ogata and Hideyuki Otoizumi earned bronze medals in the greco-roman competition on the opening day of the Dave Schultz Memorial international wrestling tournament.
Ogata rebounded from a semifinals loss to Nursultan Kalmurzaev (KAZ) at 55kg with a pair of wins, including a 2-0 (1-0, 7-0) triumph over 2011 Commonwealth Games champion Manoj Kumar (IND), for the bronze medal.
At 66kg, Otoizumi also fell in the semifinals to Asia champion Yerbol Konrytov (KAZ), but defeated two London Olympians, Luis Liendo (VEN) and Edgaras Venckaitis (LTU), for the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, newly crowned national champion Kazuma Kuramoto also advanced to the semifinals at 60kg, but was defeated by Almat Kebispayev (KAZ), a fifth-place finisher at last summer's Olympic Games. Kuramoto was then tripped up in the consolation semifinals by Pan American Games runner-up Joe Betterman (USA).
National champ Shori Maekawa notched a pair of wins in the consolation bracket at 120kg but fell short of the medals podium following a loss to 2008 Olympic Games bronze medalist Mindaugas Mizgaitis (LTU) in the consolation semifinals.
