AGEO, Saitama (February 2) – All-Japan freestyle 120kg champion Tomoyuki Oka won the over-100kg crown at the inaugural President Putin Cup sambo wrestling championships at the Saitama Prefectural Budokan.
With the triumph, Oka took the inside track on a place on the Japanese sambo team for this summer's Universiade to be held in Kazan, Russia. Oka was the only wrestler in a field dominated by judoka and sambo wrestlers to win one of the 18 titles on offer.
The Universiade, to be held in July, will feature competition in 27 sports, including 14 sports not normally contested at the university games. One of sports being organized in Kazan is sambo, which is a Russian martial art that includes judo, wrestling and jujutsu techniques.
Japan will be allowed to send four men and three women to the sambo competition with Japanese entries to be selected from among the Putin Cup winners.
