ULAANBAATAR (June 5) – Three entries in greco-roman for Japan advanced to the bronze medal finals on the opening day of the Asian junior wrestling championships, but all had to settle for fifth place finishes.
Daiki KOBAYASHI at 55kg, Naoki HANAYAMA at 74kg and Masahiro YAMAGISHI at 84kg were all toppled in the semifinals or quarterfinals and again in the matches for third place. Kobayashi lost to last year’s Asian junior bronze medalist Behrooz MALEKI (IRI) in the semifinals at 55kg and again to 2013 junior world entry Oskombai ABDUPATAEV (KGZ) for fifth place.
Hanayama lost to 2012 junior world bronze medalist Payam BOUYERI PAYANI (IRI) in the quarterfinals at 74kg and to last year’s cadet world bronze medal winner Tamerlan SHADUKAEV (KAZ), while Yamagishi lost his only two matches at 84kg but ended up with a fifth place by the luck of the draw.
