KRASNOYARSK, Russia (January 24) – Junior world champion Yu MIYAHARA overcame an upset loss to Russian Open winner Valentina ISLAMOVA (RUS) in the quarterfinals to win a bronze medal on the second day of the Yarygin Grand Prix wrestling tournament.
Miyahara of Toyo University rolled over 2014 world student champion Jasmine MIAN (CAN) in the bronze medal finals at 48kg in her first international competition since winning the junior world title last August.
Miyahara’s bronze medal was the only medal for Japan on the second day of competition in Krasnoyarsk after Gunma University’s Anri KIMURA (JPN) lost in the bronze medal final with German Grand Prix runner-up Katsiaryna HANCHAR (BLR) by fall.
Rio WATARI (JPN) lost in the second round to world bronze medalist Anastasija GRIGORJEVA (LAT) at 63kg while Chiaki IIJIMA (JPN) at 75kg and Kotaro TANAKA (JPN) at 65kg in men’s freestyle both lost in their opening bouts.
