COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (January 30) – Yo NAKATA (JPN) defeated three Americans at 61kg, including Pan American champion Andrew HOCHSTRASSER (USA), to claim Japan’s only medal of the Schultz Memorial international wrestling tournament.
Nakata opened with a loss to Hochstrasser but came back with a pair of wins, including a 3-2 triumph over junior world silver medalist Joe McKENNA (USA) in the consolation semis. Nakata avenged his loss to Hochstrasser, 6-5, in the bronze medal final.
Meanwhile, Nobuyoshi TAKOJIMA also advanced to the consolation semis after an opening round loss to eventual winner Nick MARABLE (USA), 1-5, but missed a shot at a bronze medal after falling, 2-9, to Nazar KULCHYTSKY (USA).
