SZOMBATHELY, Hungary (March 8 ) – Shinobu OTA rolled up five wins on his way to the 59kg crown on the final day of the Hungarian Grand Prix greco-roman wrestling tournament in western Hungary.
Ota shut out world bronze medalist Stig Andre BERGE (NOR) in the third round and then overwhelmed 2013 Pan American bronze medalist Spenser MANGO (USA) by technical fall in the final for his second international win – after his triumph in the Copa Brazil in November.
Also at 59kg, Ken’ichiro FUMITA notched wins in the first three rounds but lost in the quarterfinals to Asian Games bronze medalist Almat KEBISPAYEV (KAZ) by fall and did not get a chance to wrestle in the consolation bracket.
Another Copa Brasil winner, Masato SUMI was the only other Japanese wrestler to notch a win, hanging a technical fall on Japanese collegiate national champ Yuya MAEDA of Takushoku University before falling out of the tourney in the second round.
