Kawai, Dosho Win; World Champ Tosaka Tripped Up at Asian C’ships

BANGKOK (February 18-20) – World medalists Risako KAWAI and Sara DOSHO won their second Asian championship titles at 63kg and 69kg, respectively, but world champion Eri TOSAKA was tripped up by rival SUN Yanan (CHN) in the 53kg semifinals.

Tosaka, who has won three world titles 2013-2015 at 48kg, came out on the short end of a late scramble and challenge as an apparent 4-3 lead in the closing seconds for Tosaka was flipped to a 5-4 victory for eventual champion Sun.

Tosaka, who won the 2014 Asian Games gold medal with a win over Sun, rebounded for a bronze medal, despite giving up the first takedown to Dauletbike YAKHSHIMURATOVA (UZB), securing a cross-ankle lock to roll up a 12-2 technical fall.

Kawai, 2015 world silver medalist, and bronze medal winner Dosho each posted three one-sided wins for their second Asian championship titles.

Two-time junior world champ Kawai opened with an 8-4 win over 2013 junior world bronze medal winner at 72kg XU Rui (CHN) and 2011 junior world champ Dosho rolled over Yarygin Grand Prix winner Elmira SYZDYKOVA (KAZ) by technical fall in the 69kg final.

Meanwhile, Ayaka ITO (60kg) and Rino ABE (75kg) earned silver medals for Japan, but it was not enough for the team title as China grabbed the team title, 65-58 over Japan, with three champions and four bronze medal winners.
