TOKYO (May 20) – Defending champion Waseda University spotted Takushoku the first two bouts then roared back with five straight wins for a 5-2 victory in East Japan collegiate wrestling team championship.
Waseda, which won its first collegiate title in over six decades last year, notched its seventh title overall in the history of the meet.
After falling behind 0-2, Kotaro Tanaka (66kg) and Tomotsugu Ishida (74kg) evened the score before Kohei Kitamura (84kg) and Takeshi Yamaguchi (96kg) secured the win for Waseda.
In the second division, Nippon Sports Sciences University won all of its duals 7-0 and shut out the Japan Defense Academy to reclaim its position in first division.
NSSU was held out of the competition last year and dropped into the second division following a year-long ban on the team's activities following the arrest and conviction of the team member for sexual assault.
