TOKYO (December 22) – Three-time cadet world champion Yui SUSAKI overwhelmed the field at 48kg in women’s wrestling to claim her first All-Japan nationals championship title on Thursday, the second day of the All-Japan national wrestling championships.
Susaki racked up 10-0 technical falls in her first three bouts at Yoyogi National Gymnasium No.2 and turned away Asia junior champion Kika KAGATA, 5-0, in the flyweight final to join Sae NANJO as the second 17-year-old champion in as many days at the All-Japan meet.
Nanjo, a teammate of Susaki’s at the JOC Academy elite athletes development program, became the first 17-year-old national champion since 2011 when she won the 55kg crown on the opening day of the championships. Kagata, like Susaki, was a three-time cadet world champion (2012-2014) and now wrestles for Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo.
Also in women’s wrestling, Hiroe SUZUKI returned to the mats for the first time since injuring a knee in August 2015, defeating junior world champion Masako FURUICHI of Nihon University, 3-0.
In men’s freestyle, 2014 world bronze medal finalist at 57kg Yuki TAKAHASHI of Yamanashi Gakuin University won his first All-Japan championship. Meanwhile, 2014 world team member at 61kg Masakazu KAMOI with the Japanese Self-Defense Forces won his first title at 65kg while Takushoku’s Taiki YAMAMOTO repeated as champion at 125kg.
In greco-roman, former freestyle world team member at 86kg Atsushi MATSUMOTO won his first All-Japan crown in the classic style at 85kg to go with three freestyle national titles. At 75kg, defending champion Shohei YABIKU (NSSU) won for a second year in a row, while Yuta NARA (NSSU) followed up a victory at the national invitational earlier this year with his first All-Japan crown.
